King Sombra was an excellent villain, and in my honest opinion, can stand up side by side with the past MLP villains confidently. Despite having barely any lines or screen time, Sombra had much more presence. Everything we know about him are subtle hints to his character. And I like how he is left so blank and mysterious. This gives us bronies some material to work with
*spoilers and rant incoming*
We know he is calculating and cunning. The obstacles and traps that were prepared to defend the crystal heart was a clear indicator to this. His over-arching gambit seemed to be to banish the crystal empire long enough for him to escape his imprisonment, and have enough traps and delays for him to come back into power. We see that he was able to come very close to achieving his goal, ultimately defeating all attempts of protagonists, bar some luck and ingenious on-the-spot thinking.
We know he is very evil and sadistic. I'd like to believe that the denizens of the crystal empire lost their memories not through any magical means, rather than the extreme traumatizing experience of living as slaves under Sombra: "The theory/reality of repressed memory is the idea that an event is so traumatic, that the memory was not forgotten in the traditional sense, or kept secret in shame or fear, but removed from the conscious mind, still present in the long-term memory but hidden from the patient's knowledge."
I'm going to stop right here before I write up an character study essay on King Sombra
Did you ever watch Lord of the Rings, by the way?
I ask because Sombra is like Sauron... Always seeing and plotting...
Sombra is Sauron.
After all, Sombra's horn DID survive the explosion...
